The Salvation Army Serving Survivors in Nepal
The Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO) is issuing $20,000 in funding to The Salvation Army India Eastern Territory in support of survivors in Nepal following the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the area early Saturday morning, the deadliest natural disaster in more than 80 years.
In the past 72 hours, large encampments of tents have sprung up in open pockets of Nepal’s capital city of Kathmandu, for those who are displaced or afraid to return home due to strong aftershocks.
The funding will support immediate emergency relief—shelter, food, water, blankets, tents, and sanitation—as well as emotional and spiritual care. Water in particular is becoming scarce and fears are rising that children could be at risk of disease. Additional plans are in place to send medical and pastoral staff to provide physical care, food, tents, and blankets.
Five disaster specialists of The Salvation Army who are trained in emergency response are due to arrive in Kathmandu Tuesday to support services on the ground. Working in coordination with local government authorities and other aid organizations, volunteers and personnel of The Salvation Army are well prepared to service the immediate and long-term needs of impacted survivors.
As the disaster unfolds, The Salvation Army’s emergency response will shift to long-term relief and recovery solutions.
